Yamantaka // Sonic Titan – “Hoshi Neko”

Per glowing recommendation (pardon the pun) of Brent Ables and the rest of the Cokemachineglow staff, I’ve been jamming pretty heavily to the sorta-self-titled 2011 debut from Montreal’s Yamantaka // Sonic Titan. Part of a Buddhist “psych-opera collective” with a flair for theatrical live shows, KISS-style face paint, and heavy concepts, the duo deals in a strain of joyous, genre-annihilating noise that fans of Boris, Boredoms, and general transformative face-melting should be quick to warm up to. While much of YT // ST pounds and pummels its way into heavier, even black metal territory, highlight ”Hoshi Neko” offers an oasis of propulsive pop rhythms and some truly lovely vocal acrobatics. Hear the rest of this tremendous release on bandcamp and pick up a CD/LP copy from Psychic Handshake.
